Private real estate assets in Germany have doubled in the last 20 years to a total of 6 billion euro. Representing over half of all private assets property continues to be the most important form of investment.
As with other types of asset, real estate is unevenly distributed between low and high earners, old and young, employed and unemployed and western and eastern Germany. Approximately half of the population own land and buildings, with the wealthiest fifth owning 75 per cent of all property. There has been no noticeable change in this distribution in recent years.

Vermögensverteilung in Deutschland und Europa
In Deutschland beträgt das durchschnittliche Vermögen der Haushalte mit rund 450.000 Euro mehr als in Frankreich, aber weniger als in Belgien oder Luxemburg. Im Vergleich zu den drei Nachbarstaaten ist das Vermögen in der Bundesrepublik allerdings ungleicher verteilt.
