The global economy has experienced disruptive transformations in the twenty-first century. Three major crises – related to health, governance, and climate – have created a vastly different economic environment compared to previous decades.
On the one hand, a de-globalization trend has been observed, with a slowdown in trade, investment flows, and integration into global value chains (GVCs). On the other hand, geopolitics are shifting rapidly with the emergence of new economic powers, such as China. This special issue presents a selection of six articles in the fields of international economics, trade, economic integration and development economics, which were presented at the International Network for Economic Research (INFER) annual conference 2022 and have been selected subject to the usual double-blind review process of the journal.
