More from Dr. Markus Demary
Stablecoins and US national debt: Is a new financial market crisis looming?
Stablecoins are financial instruments which work similar to money market funds, and which invest in US government bonds. Stablecoins, however, issue cryptocurrencies instead of fund shares. Similar to the Eurodollar market in the 1960ies and the 1970ies are financial liabilities created, which are issued outside the US capital market.
IW
Financing the Sustainability Agenda
Financing the necessary innovations and investments for a successful decarbonisation in the EU is challenging. The main reasons are tighter banking regulations, increased bureaucracy for loan applications and portfolio reallocations away from carbon-intensive industries.
IW
An agenda for more private investment
Germany has a massive lack of investment, which dampens productivity, thereby reducing economic growth and increasingly endangering prosperity.
IW
Crypto regulation in the EU
FC Bayern Munich footballers advertise for the crypto exchange Bitpanda, Crypto.com advertised with rapper Eminem during the NBA playoffs of the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team, whose arena was renamed “Crypto.com Arena” in 2021.
IW
Financing the Sustainability Agenda
The EU has set legally binding targets for climate-neutrality by 2050. To succeed in the transition to a low-carbon economy, companies need to continuously develop new and improved climate-friendly technologies, and to adopt or move towards low-carbon business models.
IW
Why Price Stability Matters
As of March 2023, overall infation is declining in Europe. However, core infation levels continue to remain well above the 2% mandate of the European Central Bank (ECB). In fact, the current bout of infation should continue to weaken as and when supply-chain disruption and energy shortages abate.
IW
The Energy Dependence of Bank Loans
Russia's war against Ukraine has highlighted the vulnerability of the Federal Republic of Germany to Russian energy imports, especially natural gas.
IW
Financing Gaps of Companies during the Covid-19 Pandemic
For firms’ business and investment decisions their access to finance is a critical determinant. In times when access to finance becomes tight, corporations face either higher capital costs or they have to postpone their investment decisions when credit lines are not prolongated.
IW
The new inflationary environment: How persistent are the current inflationary dynamics and how is monetary policy expected to respond?
We argue that the period of low inflation has come to an end based on six structural factors, which define the new inflationary environment.
IW
How Large Is the Risk of Stagflation in the Eurozone
The rapid recovery of demand combined with supply constraints has led to rising prices during the past months. This is evident in oil and gas markets, but also in international trade, which has been thrown out of step by bottlenecks at Asian ports.
