Leadership in transformation: Megatrends and management as a driver of change

Leadership dynamics in companies are subject to constant change in order to meet the challenges of their time. Today, the greatest influences result from developments such as demographic change, globalization, individualization, structural change and technologization in the economy.

In this context, the world of work has changed fundamentally, particularly due to emerging topics such as resilience and sustainability, which have become increasingly important. Companies need to build resilience in order to survive in times of disruptive upheaval. It has become a decisive competitive advantage and makes it essential for sustainable corporate action to demonstrate a willingness to change.

Over the past decade, there has been a shift from the shareholder value approach to a broader stakeholder approach that takes into account other interest groups such as employees and society as relevant stakeholders for companies in addition to shareholders. Long-term goals and responsible action are emphasized. As a result, companies have increasingly integrated sustainable practices in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into their business models in recent years. This trend is not only reflected in the production and marketing of products and services, but also in management practices: Managers are increasingly required to make sustainable decisions that take into account not only short-term profits, but also long-term environmental and social impacts. This requires a rethink of corporate culture in order to establish sustainability as a central element of strategic orientation.

Sustainability is not just a trend, but a necessity for companies to be successful in the long term and make a positive contribution to society and the environment. Managers play a crucial role in this by developing a sustainable vision for their company and leading their teams accordingly. Leaders who drive this change must not only have an understanding of environmental and social issues, but also be able to integrate these values into their leadership practices and inspire their team to think and act sustainably.

Overall, these changes require leaders to adapt to the emerging challenges, become more values-driven and take responsibility. Companies must support their managers in these transformation processes and further develop their skills to meet the requirements.
