In 2016, Michael Hüther, Director of the German Economic Institute (IW), worked for three months as a guest professor at Stanford University in California. The IW intends to maintain this contact by sending further staff to the USA on exchange programmes and in return hosting students from the USA to work in the institute.

In cooperation with the Gerda Henkel Foundation the IW organizes an annual workshop at Stanford University on current political, economic and social developments in Germany and Europe. Additionally, the IW offers internships for doctoral candidates in Stanford’s Department of German Studies. During their stay in Cologne and the Institute’s branch offices in Berlin and Brussels they have the opportunity to learn more about current policy issues in Germany and Europe. They are also invited to contribute to studies carried out by the Institute, attend related events and visit companies.
