Measuring Material Efficiency in Companies

The efficient use of scarce materials gives companies a competitive advantage. Companies wanting to further improve their competitive position must therefore introduce material efficiency into their operations. The variety of materials and processes employed by firms and their different strategies for enhancing efficiency make it difficult to express material efficiency in a single indicator. None of the indicators discussed so far provides a completely satisfactory assessment of material efficiency in companies.
