Companies and their employees in Germany are facing a variety of challenges: new opportunities resulting from technological progress, global business relations and global competition, the demographic transition and the skilled labour shortage - and, unfortunately, the occurrence of ever new crises around the world.
IW Panels
As a result, the researchers in our Research Unit constantly confront the challenge of showing how corporate Germany is positioned, what lines of development companies are facing and whether policymakers are taking appropriate measures to nurture entrepreneurial activity and thus support the German economy.
This is where we come in. The IW Panels Research Unit designs and organises surveys of companies and employees for the specialist researchers in our thematic clusters and for external clients. This Research Unit runs the IW Future Panel and the IW Staff Panel but also conducts individual surveys.
We support the entire survey process from the initial conception, budgeting and proposal preparation, through questionnaire design, programming and implementation of the online survey, to data cleaning, extrapolation and evaluation. As survey experts, we always work closely with the economic experts in the institute’s thematic clusters.
The IW Future Panel has been surveying companies in the manufacturing and service sectors since 2006. The surveys examine economically and socially relevant change processes around current and future issues from different perspectives.
The IW Personnel Panel has carried out thrice-yearly surveys of company HR managers on current issues in personnel management since 2010. The surveys in the IW Personnel Panel have a special focus on the topics of skilled labour requirements, in-service training and skills development, and vocational and further training.
Sometimes questions arise that are highly specific or address target groups not served by our two regular panels. After careful consideration of all options and limitations, specifically tailored surveys can then be carried out.
However, we feel obliged to restrict our topics to those which are of social relevance and contribute to political debate and civic discourse. We do not conduct market research or pursue similar commercial interests.
As a thank-you for the time companies and their employees devote to our questionnaires, we generate for each respondee an individual benchmark report comparing their data with the answers provided by a relevant reference group (based on size, sector, region, etc.). This helps them to identify their position in the market and provides orientation for strategic decisions.
Throughout the entire survey process, including and especially when processing the information provided by respondees, we ensure the anonymity of all participants’ data and strict compliance with all data protection regulations. This means that no conclusions can be drawn from our surveys about individual participants or their responses.
