EIX Prognosebörse

The Handelsblatt Prognosebörse at www.eix-market.de is a prediction market where everyone in Germany can enter their assessment of how the national economy will develop. We know from the USA that such prediction exchanges have a record of great accuracy in forecasting, for example, the results of elections and sports events. This is the first time that such an instrument has been systematically developed in Germany for economic forecasts.

Anyone can take part in the new prediction exchange by registering their email address – free-of-charge – on the website www.eix-market.de. Here they then enter their predictions. The more optimistic punters are, the higher the price. The idea behind it is that the crowd is often more intelligent than the individual, the average of many forecasts more accurate than individual predictions. The Handelsblatt-Prognosebörse has been set up as an experiment to predict important economic indicators: changes in inflation, GDP, gross fixed capital formation, exports and the number of unemployed.

Participants in the Handelsblatt-Prognosebörse cannot earn real money, but those who deal frequently and accurately can win valuable prizes totalling over € 37,000. Partners in the Handelsblatt-Prognosebörse are the Handelsblatt, a business and finance weekly, the Institut der deutschen Wirtschaft (IW), the Institut für Informationswirtschaft und -management (IISM - Institute of Information Systems and Management) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the Forschungszentrum Informatik (FZI - Research Center for Information Technology).
